Electronics and Accessories

In today’s digital age, having the right electronics and accessories is essential for students to stay connected, informed, and productive. Here’re some must-have items for you.

1.  Laptop or Tablet

Having a laptop in your backpack, safely stored in one of the padded compartments, means you can study or work on assignments from anywhere. Whether you’re in a quiet corner of the library, a cozy coffee shop, or even outdoors, this flexibility allows you to make the most of your time between classes.

Taking notes during lectures is usually faster and more efficient with a laptop or tablet than writing by hand. Plus, digital notes are easy to organize, search, and share, making study sessions more productive and ensuring you capture all important information.

In addition, group projects are a common part of college life, and a laptop makes collaboration easy. For creative assignments, laptops offer essential tools like design software and video editing programs.

Pro Tip: Always have a backup of your important files. Use cloud storage services like Google Drive or Dropbox to ensure you never lose your work.

2.  Smartphone

A smartphone is arguably one of the most crucial items for students. It serves multiple purposes, from communication and scheduling to research and entertainment. With various apps, you can manage your time, keep track of assignments, and even study on the go.

Your smartphone ensures you’re always connected, able to check emails, participate in group chats, or access online resources at any time. Plus, it doubles as an emergency tool with maps, contact information, and the ability to call for help if needed.

3.  Chargers and Power Bank

Whenever I am on campus and my laptop or smartphone runs out of power, I tend to feel a mix of frustration and anxiety. It’s like being stranded. As a student, keeping your electronic devices charged is crucial. Chargers and a power bank are lifesavers, ensuring that your laptop, tablet, or smartphone remains powered up throughout the day.

Bringing these accessories with you in your backpack prevents disruptions during classes, study sessions, or when you’re on the go, allowing you to stay connected and productive at all times.

4.  Flash Drive or External Hard Drive

Have you ever lost more than a dozen gigabytes of data and realized that you had no backup and hence no way of retrieving the lost data? It’s a really frustrating feeling!

It’s essential to back up your important files and projects regularly. A flash drive or external hard drive provides extra storage space and a portable backup solution for your digital files. Whether you need to transfer files between computers, collaborate on group projects, or safeguard your work against computer crashes or theft, having a reliable storage device in your backpack ensures you’re always in the green.

Invest in a high-capacity flash drive or external hard drive with encryption capabilities to protect your information and keep your academic work secure.

5.  Earphones or Headphones

Earphones or headphones are more than just luxury accessories; they are essential for students. Whether you need to listen to recorded lectures (or YouTube tutorials), block out noise while studying, or unwind with music between lectures or after a long day of classes, having a reliable pair of headphones is a game-changer.

Having your earbuds handy means you can instantly tune out distractions and immerse yourself in your work, even in the busiest spots on campus. These accessories not only provide audio clarity but also help you focus and immerse yourself in your academic tasks without having to worry about being in a public space.

My headphones are usually very handy during my study breaks in the library, as they me escape into my favorite music/podcast or audiobooks without leaving my spot.

Stationery and Study Materials

Whether you’re attending lectures, or studying at the library, having your stationery and study materials is a necessity. Let’s dive into the essential backpack items every student should carry in their backpack!

6.  Pens, Pencils, and Highlighters

This one is a no-brainer! Pens, pencils, and highlighters are fundamental tools for any student. Pens are perfect for writing down important information or note-taking during lectures, while pencils are great for doing sketches, diagrams, and mind maps, as they allow for corrections and flexibility.

Highlighters are handy for color-coding key points and essential information in your textbooks or notes. By using different colors, you can categorize topics and make studying more organized and visually engaging. This is especially necessary if you are a visual learner who learns better by seeing.

Having dedicated pockets in your backpack or a small case for these items ensures they are always within reach.

7.  Notebooks or Binders

Although typing is generally more efficient than the traditional pen-and-paper note-taking methods, studies show that writing by hand enhances memory retention compared to typing.

Also, you will agree with me that there are some subjects or pieces of information that are just much easier to write by hand than to type. Have you ever tried typing out all your notes in a math class…? or keeping up with all the formulas in physics or chemistry using a keyboard?

You might be thinking… “But writing by hand doesn’t always mean writing with a pen and paper right?” Correct! A note-taking tablet is also a great substitute for pen and paper. However, bringing a pen and paper (even if it’s just a pocket notebook) is great practice.

Additionally, having dedicated notebooks or binders for different subjects helps you avoid the confusion of mixed-up notes and ensures a structured approach to studying.

8.  Scientific Calculator

A scientific calculator is a must-have backpack essential for you if you’re taking math and/or science courses. It enables you to perform complex calculations, work on algebraic problems, and handle scientific notation with ease. While some professors may restrict the use of calculators, having one for practice and homework significantly boosts your efficiency in problem-solving and understanding mathematical concepts.

You should know that calculators come in different types, with different functions. Just as you would choose the right hiking shoes for different terrains, having the right calculator ensures you’re adequately prepared. So make sure to find out from your professors which type of calculator they recommend for the class.

9.  Textbooks and/or Course Materials

While many students rely on digital resources and online platforms for their coursework, having physical textbooks and course materials can still be beneficial.

Whether it’s for reference, studying offline, or completing assignments that require specific editions or formats, having the required textbooks and supplementary materials in your backpack ensures you’re always prepared for class.

Investing in quality stationery and study materials not only enhances your academic performance but also allows for a more organized and efficient learning process. Make sure to equip yourself with the right tools to set yourself up for success in your academic journey.

Hydration and Nutrition

Proper hydration and nutrition play a vital role in your daily life both as a student and as a human being. It’s essential to fuel your body and mind properly to better tackle the challenges of a busy academic schedule. Here are two key components to consider:

10. Reusable Water Bottle

Carrying a reusable water bottle (with water in it) is a smart choice for staying hydrated throughout the day. Not only does it help you maintain optimal focus and energy levels, but it also reduces the environmental impact of single-use plastic bottles. Investing in a durable, BPA-free water bottle is a sustainable and healthy habit that benefits both you and our beautiful planet.

Just make sure to actually drink the water in the bottle. It doesn’t help to carry water if you won’t be drinking it. I recommend the motivational water bottles as they encourage you to drink water throughout the day. My overall water consumption has greatly increased since I purchased a motivational water bottle sometime last year (2023).

11. Healthy Snacks

Having nutritious snacks can be good for maintaining your focus and productivity throughout the day. Sometimes you randomly feel hungry and crave to eat something.  A quick and healthy snack in your backpack can easily solve your problem and provide a boost of energy. Opt for snacks like nuts, fruits, yogurt, or whole-grain crackers to keep your brain sharp and your stomach satisfied.

By planning and packing a variety of wholesome snacks, you can avoid unhealthy vending machine options and stay on top of your game.

Personal Essentials

Carrying personal essentials in your backpack as a student is crucial for staying prepared and comfortable throughout the day on campus. These items not only contribute to your hygiene but also ensure you are ready to handle unforeseen situations with ease.

12. Hand Sanitizer and Tissues

Maintaining proper hygiene is paramount. Having hand sanitizer readily available in your backpack allows you to keep your hands clean, especially when soap and water are not easily accessible. Tissues are also useful for personal hygiene, sneezing, or cleaning surfaces before use.

They are essential backpack items you don’t want to leave behind. You can protect yourself from germs and prevent the spread of illnesses among your peers.

13.  Wallet with ID and Emergency Cash

Carrying a wallet with your identification and some emergency cash is essential for any student. Your ID can be vital in emergencies or instances where you need to prove your identity. Having a bit of cash on hand can help in unforeseen situations like transportation issues or unexpected expenses.

By keeping these items in your backpack, you are better prepared for any unplanned events that may arise during your day on campus.

14. Small Towel or Cloth and handkerchief

Carrying a handkerchief, small towel, or cloth in your backpack is a good practice. You may need to wipe away sweat after a workout, clean up spills in the cafeteria, or dry your hands after washing them, a compact towel ensures you’re always prepared for quick clean-ups.

A tissue is a good substitute, but sometimes a towel does the job much better – like drying out sweat or your hands. Opt for a quick-drying microfiber towel or a soft cotton cloth that won’t take up much space in your bag but will come in handy when you least expect it.

15. Mint or Gum

Mint or gum is a must-have if you’re looking to maintain a fresh breath throughout the day. Popping a mint or chewing gum into your mouth can help keep your breath fresh and your mind alert.

Additionally, mint has been shown to improve concentration and cognitive function, making it an essential companion for long study sessions or exam days. Just be sure to choose sugar-free options to protect your dental health. These items are also great to have on hand for day trips or excursions away from campus.

16. Lip Balm and Hand Lotion

If you’re a student, then it’s likely that you are very conscious about your appearance. This means, how you look can have an impact on you. Don’t let dry, chapped lips or hands distract you from your studies. Keep a tube of lip balm and a small bottle of hand lotion in your backpack to combat dryness and maintain comfort throughout the day.

Harsh weather, indoor heating, and frequent hand washing can take a toll on your skin, so having moisturizing essentials on hand ensures you’re always prepared to soothe and hydrate when needed. Look for products with natural ingredients like shea butter, and coconut oil for gentle, nourishing care.

17. Emergency Contact List

In case of unexpected situations or emergencies, having an emergency contact list is essential. Include contacts of family members, friends, and any relevant authorities or services. This list can be a physical copy in your backpack or stored on your phone for quick access. Being prepared with emergency contacts ensures that help is easily reachable when needed, providing you with a sense of security and support.

18. First Aid Kit

Small first aid kit - Essential Backpack item

Having a first aid kit in your backpack is a small yet essential step in ensuring you’re prepared for any minor emergencies on campus. Whether it’s a cut, scrape, or headache, a first aid kit can provide immediate relief both to you and to those around you.

It’s comforting to know that you can quickly address minor injuries or ailments without having to seek help. The kit should include basics like Band-Aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications you might need.

Pro Tip: Regularly check and restock your first aid kit to ensure it’s always ready for use.

Organization and Miscellaneous Items

Being organized as a student is crucial for managing your responsibilities effectively. Here are some essential backpack items to help you stay on top of things and be prepared for anything that comes your way.

19. Planner or Calendar

A planner or calendar is great for keeping track of assignments, project deadlines, exams, and important events. By jotting down tasks and appointments, you can prioritize your workload effectively and avoid last-minute stress. Having a visual representation of your schedule helps in planning ahead and managing your time efficiently. So make sure your planner is always with you.

Consider using digital calendars for convenience or opt for a traditional paper planner based on your preference.

You also want to bring along a printed copy of your class timetable and study timetable with you when you leave your dorm room.

20. Umbrella or Raincoat

Unpredictable weather can spoil your day, especially when rushing between classes, heading to the library or commuting back home. Carrying an umbrella or a compact raincoat in your backpack ensures you’re ready for rain showers or sudden weather changes.

Staying dry and comfortable not only preserves your focus on your studies but also prevents any health issues caused by being exposed to harsh weather conditions. Note, however, that you don’t need to bring an umbrella with you during the dry winter season.

Fun fact: My foldable compact umbrella is always in my backpack – 365 days a year! I surprisingly don’t know why I chose to leave it there. Perhaps because I got a suitable spot for it, or maybe because it’s very lightweight.

21. Reusable Shopping Bag

A reusable shopping bag is an eco-friendly and practical addition to your backpack. It’s perfect for carrying groceries, books, or gym clothes, and it saves you from needing to purchase plastic bags.

As a student, there are countless times when you might need an extra bag, whether it’s for carrying extra materials to class or for spontaneous shopping. Reusable bags are durable, lightweight, and can be folded to fit easily in your backpack until needed.

Pro Tip: Keep your reusable bag clean by washing it regularly, especially after carrying food items.

Being well-prepared with these essential backpack items is essential for every student aiming for a more successful and less stressful academic journey.
